What Inventory Management Software Do Car Dealers Use? Data From 862 Scanned Dealerships
Inventory management is one of the highest adoption categories in our scan data at 43%. Carfax leads, followed by AutoCheck, vAuto, and DealersLink. Here's the full breakdown.
Inventory management is the second-highest adoption category in our independent dealer scan data — 43% of dealers have at least one detectable inventory management signal on their website. It’s the category where independent dealers are most likely to have invested in tooling, which makes sense: without inventory management, running a car lot is chaos.
Vehicle history: the floor of inventory management
The most commonly detected inventory management signals aren’t sophisticated pricing tools — they’re vehicle history badges. Carfax appears on 27% of independent dealer sites. AutoCheck appears on 19%.
These numbers reflect dealers who are embedding Carfax or AutoCheck badges directly on their vehicle listings — a standard practice that shows shoppers the vehicle history report is available. For many independent dealers, this is the extent of their “inventory management technology” web presence.
The Carfax vs AutoCheck split reflects Carfax’s stronger brand recognition and marketing investment — not necessarily a meaningful quality difference between the products.
Pricing and market intelligence tools
vAuto: the franchise standard, present in independent data. vAuto’s Provision and ProfitTime GPS platforms show up in our independent dealer dataset. vAuto is primarily designed for franchise dealers, but used car pricing intelligence has genuine value for independents with enough volume to justify the cost.
DealersLink: the growing independent-focused alternative. DealersLink positions itself directly against vAuto for independent and mid-size franchise dealers — more features at lower cost. It appears with growing frequency in our independent dataset, particularly as vAuto’s pricing has increased post-Cox acquisition.
LotLinx: inventory-level advertising intelligence. LotLinx focuses specifically on inventory-level advertising — helping dealers understand which vehicles aren’t getting enough exposure and need advertising support. It appears in our independent dealer data at meaningful rates.
SpinCar: 360-degree vehicle photography. SpinCar’s 360-degree photo and virtual tour technology shows up in our scan data. Dealers investing in SpinCar are specifically trying to differentiate their online vehicle presentation.
The CarGurus widget: inventory management meets lead capture
CarGurus Widget appears on 22% of independent dealer sites — one of the most common inventory signals we detect. This is dealers who have embedded CarGurus’s inventory widget on their own website. It serves double duty: inventory management (real-time market pricing data) and lead capture.
The opportunity in the gap
The 57% of independent dealers without detectable inventory management tooling aren’t necessarily pricing blind. Some are using their DMS’s built-in inventory tools. But some genuinely are running on intuition and market feel — and in a market where used car prices shift monthly, that’s increasingly risky.
